Education Programming
Dear Educators,
We are the Archaeological Society of Alberta (ASA), a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate Albertans about archaeology and the province's rich archaeological heritage. The ASA has six volunteer-run centres: the Edmonton Centre, Bodo Archaeological Society, Red
Deer Centre, Calgary Centre, Lethbridge Centre, and South Eastern Alberta Archaeological Society. Each centre offers educational programming, such as a speaker series, field trips, school visits, and archaeology-related events. The ASA also produces archaeological publications and hosts a yearly conference.
The ASA would like to introduce you to Taydem LaRocque, the ASA-Edmonton Centre (ASAEC) secretary and an avid public archaeologist. Taydem runs our in-school educational programming during the 2024-2025 school year.
School-Aged Programming:
We offer two types of in-school educational programming:
1. In-class workshops:
ASAEC in-class workshops include hands-on engagement with archaeological material, activities, and presentations aligned with Alberta curricula. This is an excellent option for students of all ages to engage with Alberta’s archaeological and cultural heritage through hands-on experiential learning that enriches Alberta's curricular outcomes.
2. Large group/Assembly presentations:
ASAEC assembly presentations offer students an understanding of archaeology and how it relates to the world around them, both historically and in the contemporary context. Students gain an understanding of why archaeology is essential to the preservation and appreciation of culture.
Depending on availability and scheduling, it may be possible to arrange both in-class workshops and assembly presentations.
Archaeological Educator Training:
Training is available for educators who want to understand archaeology and its use in historical, cultural, and contemporary education. This training program will give educators the tools to define archaeological concepts and provide resources to learn more, which can be directly applied in the classroom.
